Why did British merchants go to India?
To make their fortunes! They knew that Indian goods-especially cotton cloth, drugs, and dyestuffs-fetched high prices in Europe. In 1600 they set up the East India Company, to organize trade. The Company grew very rich, and had its own private army. By 1757, it controlled the richest parts of India and almost all Indian trade.
