Merchants from the north coast of Africa who traveled across the Sahara desert to trade with people living in the West African kingdoms of Ghana, Mali, and Songhay, which were powerful from around AD 700 to 1600. Flakes of gold were found among gravel in West African rivers and streams; sweet smelling sandalwood came from tropical trees.
