In AD 1206, all the separate Mongol tribes united under a warlike leader, called Temujin. He took the title Genghis Khan (supreme ruler) and set out to conquer the world. His armies destroyed Baghdad in 1258. By 1279, they controlled a vast empire, stretching from China to eastern Europe.
