An electric bulb has a very thin filament of tungsten wire inside a glass bulb filled with argon or nitrogen gas. When current flows through such a thin wire, the resistance is so great that the wire heats up and glows brightly. If it wasn't surrounded by non-reactive nitrogen or argon gas, it would quickly burn through.
