It causes radiation sickness. With a very high dose, the victim dies in a few hours from nerve damage. With a less high dose, the victim dies after a week or so from damage to the gut or a complete collapse of the body's resistance to disease. Lower doses of radiation can cause cancer (including leukaemia) and defects in new-born babies.
