A chemical formula is a shorthand way of describing an atom, an ion or a molecule. Initial letters (sometimes plus an extra letter) usually identify the atom or ion; a little number indicates how many atoms are involved. The formula for water is H₂O, because each molecule consists of two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom.
