Why are tapirs black and white?
You might think that a Malayan tapir's black and white stripes would make it stick out like a sore thumb! But the opposite is true. The stripy pattern actually helps the tapir to hide among the patches of light and shade on the rainforest floor. Baby tapirs are born with a pattern of spots and stripes for even better camouflage. They lose these markings when they are eight months old.
