Some desert creatures, such as tortoises, enter a deep sleep called aestivation to avoid the hottest summer weather. In harsh Mongolian deserts, furry mammals called susliks sleep out the scorching summer; they also hibernate in winter. Aestivation comes from the Latin word for summer, and hibernation from the Latin word for winter.
