When is a kangaroo really a rat?
Kangaroo rats have strong, springy hind legs shaped like a kangaroo's legs. As they bound along at high speed, their paws make little contact with the burning ground. These rodents also leap high in the air, to reach the young, tasty shoots of desert shrubs. Jerboas, of African and Asian deserts, are rodents with very similar hind legs that live in the same way.
