Locusts are desert insects with long hind legs and powerful muscles. Adult locusts can leap up to 10 times their own body length and can also fly. Young locusts are called hoppers. They can't fly, as their wings haven't yet developed, but they are expert jumpers. They gather in groups called bands and hop about the desert. The bigger the group, the faster these young insects hop!
