Hognose snakes are non-venomous snakes from the western United States and Mexico. The snake hisses loudly to frighten away attackers. If this does not work the hognose plays dead, rolling on to its back and lying still, with its mouth open and its tongue lolling out. Many predators will not touch dead prey, so the snake's plan often works well.
