Which bird makes a hole in a cactus to nest in?
Woodpeckers normally nest in trees, but there are few trees in the desert. The gila woodpecker, of American deserts nests in the tall saguaro cactus instead. It drills out its nest hole with its strong, sharp beak. In time, the juicy flesh, inside the hole, dries out to make a cool, safe place for the bird to raise its chicks.
