How do trapdoor spiders get their name?
The trapdoor spider, which lives in western America, sets a clever trap for its prey. It digs a burrow and lines it with silk, from its abdomen. Then it fashions a little lid from earth and silk, and attaches it to the top with a silken hinge. It lurks just inside its burrow. When an insect passes, the spider flips its lid and leaps out to grab its meal.
