Male elephants can become very aggressive, which is how they react in the wild, if threatened. Wild elephants cover enormous distances in a single day's walking, so keeping them in an enclosure even one that seems big to us - can make an elephant extremely unhappy. The stress they suffer can shorten their lifespan and affect breeding.
