Why did the hawksbill turtle need protecting?
Tortoiseshell is the horny outer layer of the hawksbill turtle's shell. For many years hawskbills were hunted for their shells, which were made into all sorts of trinkets, boxes, fans, and combs and sometimes used to decorate furniture. Now the hawksbill is endangered it's strictly protected, though in some parts of the world young hawksbills are reared specially to be killed for their shells.
