Why are some lizards black?
You can often find black lizards in high mountains, where the sunlight is bright but the air is cold. Their black skins allow them to warm up better than if they had a pale skin. In just one hour in the sun, the lava lizard of the Peruvian Andes mountains can raise its temperature to 91.5°F (33°C) -when the temperature of the air around it is only 35°F (1.5°C).
