Hermes, messenger to the gods, is often shown carrying a staff with two snakes twined round it. Greek mythology says that these were originally two white ribbons. Then Hades, who ruled over the kingdom of the dead, gave Hermes the job of laying his staff on the eyes of the dying, and turned the ribbons into snakes.
