When they are caught, or badly frightened, some snakes pretend to be dead. A snake playing possum rolls limply on to its back, dislocates its jaws. and hangs its tongue out of its mouth. But the snake is not dead, and after a few minutes of acting, it will turn over and slip quickly away.
