Poisonous snakes bite large numbers of people every year, though there are no reliable figures to say how many attacks are fatal. Modern treatment means that far more people survive snakebites than used to be the case. Saltwater crocodiles and Nile crocodiles attack, and probably kill, up to 3,000 people a year.
