Giant tortoises grow up to 4.5 ft (1.4 meters) long and weigh as much as 550 lb (250 kg). They live on the Galapagos Islands in the Pacific and on the island of Aldabra in the Indian Ocean. Seychelles giant tortoises were thought to be extinct in the wild-to have died out completely-but some living animals have recently been discovered. Efforts are being made to breed more tortoises in captivity and release them into the wild.
