A time of dangerous tension from 1947 to 1989 between the USA and the USSR-the two strongest nations on Earth. They had very different political systems and they distrusted and feared one another. The USA believed in freedom and big business; the USSR was communist. The superpowers never fought face to face, but they encouraged wars between smaller nations as a way of increasing their power.
