Amphibians begin life as spotlike, jelly-covered eggs called spawn. These are laid in water or a damp place. They hatch into larvae (tadpoles), with feathery gills on their heads, which they use to breathe under water. This fire salamander larva is undergoing metamorphosis. It is growing legs and will soon move onto land.
