How do we taste food?
The sense of taste comes from taste buds on the tongue, inside the cheek, on the roof of the mouth, and in the throat. Humans can only distinguish between four basic tastes-sweet, sour, salty, and bitter-but when these are combined with a sense of smell, we can distinguish between many different foods. Animals that live in water often have a particularly well-developed sense of taste. Deep-sea fish have poor sight, and some of them rely on taste-sensitive filaments that hang from their mouths.
